Being the app data privacy freak that I’ve become, I thought I’d dive briefly into why I’m self-hosting, and what I’m self-hosting.
I started off with TinyTinyRSS, the first app I hosted myself, in about 2010 because I didn’t really want to use someone else’s server (the Dev’s), and I had just started my journey into renting servers. The term “cloud” was still trying to work its way into everyday language.
As I grew proficient at server admin I started to rent more servers and host more apps, and the hobby started to take off. And I began to realize, not only how much I enjoyed the challenge, but just how much these parasitic companies mined user data to market products to end-users. It was mind-boggling.
I quickly came to the realization that I did not want these giant, billionaire-owned data mines to have access to any more of my data. So, as they say, the rest is history.
